Let me be clear.. SOME things should be unbalanced. SOME things need to be fully weighted in one direction, and unapologetic about it.

But most things, need balance.

It’s a constant struggle for me, finding balance between all of the things in my life. I spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how much of my attention should go into my music, when my life is filled with so many things that require (and deserve) so much attention. But the problem is never as cut and dry as I’d like it to be, and it infinitely splits into smaller problems. For instance, family time vs me time. Sounds simple enough… to be a good father & husband, I NEED to have some time on my own, to rest, to realign myself with my goals, to pursue my own interests. But within my allotted “me time”, it splits into a new problem.. music vs making things vs running… making things splits into software vs house projects vs electronics vs ….

(This ties pretty heavily to previous posts where I’ve talked about how many types of things I’m interested in, and how that may or may not be a good thing.)

But even outside of “me” decisions, there’s a question of balance. As a father, I try daily to figure out how to balance my responses to my children, and their behavior. I want to be stern, consistent, impactful… but not all of the time. I don’t want them growing up thinking of me as the overly strict guy who yelled a lot.

My oldest can start pre-k in the fall, and now I’m faced with questions of balance for him. How hard do we push him? How much do we expect? How do we help vs let him struggle and figure things out for himself? It goes on and on.

So, with all of these outstanding questions of balance, some deep and some not, I spend a good deal of time trying to find a sweet spot, the “right balance”. And I’m beginning to realize that the idea of a “sweet spot” is the problem. That implies that there is a specific proportion to be found, and that once it’s found, everything will fit. This is NOT true (for me, at least.)

I’m starting to see that I’ve been missing a dimension in my daily search for balance. Time.

I’m beginning to realize that there’s a variable “swing” that can happen with balance. “Balance” here is not “everything being of equal weight”, but actually “everything in it’s right proportion”. The distinction is small, but HUGE. Sometimes, I need to be a father 100%, and individual 0%. Sometimes, I need to be a musician 90%, everything else gets to fight over that remain 10%.

It DOESN’T mean, that I should be 50% musician/50% father all of the time. That’d make for a crappy father, and a crappy guitar player.

The point is, that it’s not equal, but it’s also not constant. “For everything, there is a season.”

(Note, I wrote this several months ago, and didn’t finish it on that plane. )

I could be sleeping, but I’m not.. And I think I know why.

I’ve been in California all week on business, and that has meant a few things. It’s time for me to really focus on my job during the days, enjoy the time with my other remote co-workers (one of which is my brother, so that’s cool) but it also means after work hours that aren’t filled with parental duties.. FREE TIME.

So, back to the reason I’m not asleep. I’m pretty sure that I don’t know, and have never known, how to have free time. Even when I’m not out of town, and I don’t have a slot of time scheduled with something, I still have a list of things in my head, ready to fill that time. For instance, this plane right from San Francisco to Atlanta is almost 4 hours long, and I’ve spent all but 10 minutes on a computer. I’ve accomplished a lot so far on this flight.. I wrote a short song, recorded several parts on my iPad, spent a couple of hours programming and learning some development stuff that I’d been putting off, and now.. I’m writing a blog post.

I remember when I was a kid, probably 6 or 7, asking my mom, over and over, “what can we do? I’m bored” She gently replied.. “Sometimes you need to do nothing.” She’s completely right, of course.. but I have a pretty hard time with that.

I’ve tried to figure out why that is. I think it’s that I’ve been given a thirst for learning and making. That thirst is stronger than my thirst for rest (after a cup of coffee of course), and I’m ok with that.

Even though I have moments where I think “I really wish I could just sit down and do nothing”, the majority of the time, I’m completely excited by the next item on my backlog of “stuff I want to get to..”. As with all things, I think there’s just a balance that has to be found, and I constantly have to find that within myself.

In one of my favorite movies, a character says “It’s amazing how productive ‘doing nothing’ can be.”

It’s true. There’s a balance to be found, between sprinting and resting, between building and standing back to look at progress.

Then they start to see the toys as more than colorful hunks of plastic, over time. They start to attach identity to those things… the toys get personas, backstory, etc. It’s fun watching them associate a toy that they’ve had with a character for the first time, and even more fun watching them make up their own character to fit a toy.

My oldest son (3 1/2) has started moving into another stage of play recently, and it’s something that resonates pretty deeply with me. When I first saw him do this, I was immediately sent back 30 years (30? that’s crazy).

I’ve watched him get a group of toys (sometimes cars, sometimes dinosaurs) and set them all up for play, usually in a row, or line, or hidden deep within a couch cushion cave. And after he’s got everything in place, something happens. All of the sudden, there’s a “situation” with someone in trouble. usually, the rest of the group are all in it together, and they’re trying to fix this “thing”. I’ll hear him say things like “oh no! We’ve got to get him to the place!” “There’s a thing coming!! We’ve got to get out of here!”

I TOTALLY remember playing, and feeling like there was a life threatening situation brewing (in the lives of my toys) even if I didn’t know what that situation was. There was an urgency, a danger, a need that I was responsible for playing out, and ultimately leading my GI Joes to win/save/correct the situation.

But what’s really interesting, and unique about this point in my son’s life, is that he has absolutely no context for need. He has no dire situations to fill in to his story. and I didn’t either.

Now, I noticed this a couple of months ago.. and I thought it was cute, and remembered doing the exactly same thing. Then yesterday it hit me. Maybe it’s being a male, maybe it’s being human, but for most people, there’s an inherent longing to fix something. That fix could be a physical break, a dangerous situation, an injustice, and unfulfilled need, etc. But even from 3 years old, he’s trying to fix something, and he doesn’t even know what it is. It hit me, that I am responsible for giving him context here.

They’re looking for the problem to fill into their story. As parents, I think it’s our responsibility to guide that desire to fix.. if we don’t it will be directed by the world around us. We need to show them examples of problems that matter, and are fixable.

Now, I don’t mean that we need to convince them that their play should be about solving hunger, or stopping slavery. I just mean that we should impress on them that saving is more important than winning…. helping is more important than getting. Imagine the difference, if a child grows up to know that they should fight for those in need, instead of fight to be on top.

It’s up to us to shape the things that children value. It’s up to us to teach them to protect and cherish life, even if that’s by making Optimus Prime save Hello Kitty from an alligator pit.

The thing that’s been going on lately is a struggle to “make”.. music, specifically. I started, on May 1, writing/recording/filming a song and it’s been a strange couple of weeks since then. First off, time is hard to find. Working around real life and nap times makes it hard to dedicate the time to thoughtfully write and effectively record music in a house with 3 small children. Added events and engagements have also eaten away at the little free time available. Regardless of the difficulty I’ve found in starting this project, I’ve found (or been reminded of) some really amazing things.

My wife is awesome, and patient, and awesome.

I prefer the way a snare (played with brushes) sounds when miked from underneath.

My kids deserve more than I could ever do for them, but every moment I give them is an investment in their joy.

It turns out that I CAN write music on my own.

My organ has an amazing bass sound.

a little encouragement and interest goes a long way.

Half of the struggle of creation is dedicating focus to it’s process.

There’s a ton more… but it can wait for future posts. The song isn’t finished, and I won’t release it until I get the video edited, so expect it to be a while. (I’ll probably be launching a site for my music when the song is ready)

(FYI, I’m trying to make my first Videosong, read this if you don’t know what that is.)

So, I’ve been writing more lately, and posting less about what I was actually DOING (although writing is DOing something, I suppose)

Well, here’s one of the things I did this weekend. We had a chandelier from the 70′s hanging above our dining room table, and a while back I took it down, spray painted it red and rehung it. It worked for a while, because it was unique, but it was still lame, and we’ve been wanting more/better light.

We decided to build a fixture since it’d fit our space correctly, and well, we’re picky about how things look.

After figuring out the design, I set into building it, and already had most of the components around the shop. The wood was leftover 1″x from another project and a sliver of luan. The rods were old pieces of white tent poles that I’ve kept in a corner for 5 years waiting for a use. We just bought the shades for $12 each at Homegoods and some simple lamp parts from Home Depot.

I’ve added a gallery below of the project, and all of the steps along the way (see simple descriptions in captions)

I’ll post some finished pics once it painted and finally mounted (and the room around it is in a prettier state.)
