So, obviously the floor had a ton of rust holes, and what metal was there was very thin.. so I thought it best to completely replace the floor..
I couldn’t find any place in the US that had replacement floors.. but I did find them at ScootRS..
I didn’t know anything about these guys (stilll don’t really)
I’ve heard so many bad things about scooters and parts from Asia, that I was hesistant… but i thought I’d gamble on them..
I ordered 2 floors (1 for the Allstate .. it’ll need it eventually)

They were only about $22 each (which is amazing to me, they’re REALLY nicely made, and heavy duty) but the shipping to get them over here was outrageous.. so it evens out..
Both of then ended up costing me $124 shipped, and took about 10 days to get here..
So, i marked the new floor onto the existing floor and started cutting out the old stuff..

it was much harder than I expected because of the spot welds along the center channel.. I had to chisel them all out..

but eventually I got it all out

and could set the new floor in place..

Check out the difference

I also found the the little slope running down to the floorboard off the center channel was pretty eaten away..
So, I got this stuff called Ospho, it’s really cheap and you buy it by the gallon..
When wiped onto a rusted surface, it turns the rust into a black primer like substance..
It’s really amazing how well it works..
I just completely covered all of the parts I had with it (liberally) and let it dry..
these pics are what it looked like once it dried..
(It dries kind of bubbled up, but it brushes off easily)

I ran over the whole thing with a piece of sandpaper, and it became a really good surface..

here are some of the serious problems with the floorboard…

ok, so I’ve been really slack about posting progress on this bike so far..
Although I have been taking pictures.. so I’ll try to get them up online ..
Here are some initial shots of when I got the bike.. it was in pretty bad shape..
It had been media blasted at one point, but had a thin later of surface rust, and TONS of holes eaten through the floorboard..
The front fender hole is all chewed up and the left side panel had a chunk taken out of the back.. completely rusted away..
The gas tank, right engine cowl, wheels, fork etc are all in pretty good shape..

I realized that I never posted a picture of my deck after it was finished..
We’ve been enjoying it quite a bit, and even since this picture, we’ve gotten furniture and alal of that..
but here it is completely built..

Sweet idea, and an excellent use of Flash
Well, found a deal I couldn’t pass up at Scomo..
unfortunately, I didn’t have a way to bring it back to my shop, so it’s in Richmond for a couple of weeks..
Here are some pics from the shop…

This one will probably be a long term project, since the GL has priority (it’s for some friends).
Overall, the scooter is intact, just a good amount of rust out onthe floorboard/legshield and the engine won’t crank.
I did find out that you can buy replacement floorboards for Vespas (altohugh I’m having trouble actually finding one) and that’ll stop me from having to try and fill the holes in the GL floorboard.
I promise to post pictures soon of the GL, it’s about to start to really get moving as soon as I can find a replacement floor for it..
Well, last week we got the pile of parts that used to be a Vespa..
My friends Jason & Rebecca asked me to restore a scooter for them a little while back, so we started by find the GL (almost complete) for a good price..
It’d been disassmbled, and sandblasted.. but then sat for a couple of years, and regathers quite a bit of surface rust.
I priced out a couple of places getting the necessary body work done (which was a good deal) and found that it was just too pricey.. so I bought a welder to try and do as much of it as I could myself..
I’ve always wanted to learn how to weld, and this was the perfect testbed.
over this weekend, we made really nice progress on the body, and I’ll post a detaield description and pics in the next couple days..
I’m going to try and keep an even more detailed log than I did on the VNB..
(I’ve also got my eyes on a ’61 Allstate.. hopefully coming soon)
In other news, lots been going on at ScooterFanatic.com lately, and hopefully will continue..
We had the first ever Scooter Rally in Savannah this past weekend, which turned out great for a first try, and we officially started the River City Pirates Scooter Club..
If you’re in the area, we’ll be meeting every wednesday at 7 pm at Vinnie’s downtown.
More to come…
This is sweet
You can add barcodes and a product description (I added a 3 oz bag of cool ranch doritos)
or just use your webcam to scan a barcode and see if it already exists i nthe DB..
Hopefully they’ll hook into ISBN somehow so you could really scan just about any media..
I’ve seen a lot of posts lately about the free stuff that people get from Macromedia ( http://www.abdulqabiz.com/blog/archives/macromedia_flex/000121.php )
so I thought I’d list the stuff I have…
1. the software that I PAID for.
that’s it! cool huh?
I still haven’t really figured out the reason for flaunting the list of free stuff you get, but oh well.. free t-shirts are never a bad thing.
Stumbled onto this, thought it was pretty funny..
