Not too long ago, I made a table top called Quarto as a late (like 7 years late) wedding present for a friend. During that process, I started thinking about other games that we play that would be fun to make. Othello (or Reversi) came to mind, specifically because the game pieces are two sided and each side has a different color material. I really enjoy contrasting materials, and I thought the challenge of making those pieces might be fun.
During the design process, I actually thought through combining really different materials for the pieces, like walnut and aluminum. Eventually, I landed on just using contrasting woods, walnut and maple, then carrying those materials over to the game board as well.
